Access systems for the Arctic

January 15, 2026

Not in response to efforts by US President Donald Trump to annex Greenland, but in the Arctic region of Alta in Norway, the access systems manufacturer Dormakaba has launched an extraordinary pilot project for access solutions under extreme climatic conditions.

The aim of the pilot project is to test access systems that reduce energy consumption and  function reliably even in extreme sub-zero temperatures and arctic weather conditions. The  pilot installation encompasses key areas of the world's northernmost ice hotel.  "Testing our solutions in an environment of ice and snow presents our technical development  with challenges that go far beyond the usual limits," says Till Reuter, CEO of Dormakaba.

Real-time monitoring

“If our technology proves reliable here, we will be setting new standards in efficiency and resilience.” The system uses “MotionIQ,” which optimizes automatic door operation and,  according to the manufacturer, reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 50 percent. Digital tools enable optimized planning and real-time monitoring of the systems.

Sorrisniva is an internationally renowned year-round resort with exclusive accommodations in a "Wilderness Lodge"overnight stays in the world's northernmost ice refuge, and nature experiences. For Dormakaba, this provides ideal conditions for testing new access technologies under real, extreme conditions.
