Protected medication transport

May 6, 2022

The hospital pharmacy at the Munich University Hospital rechts der Isar supplies the hospital's approximately 1,100 beds and two other customers with medications. Reusable containers with thermal insulation inserts and the MB Pharmabox from Bito ensure the safe, refrigerated transport of these often expensive medications.

The pharmacy of the Klinikum rechts der Isar (University Hospital of the Technical University of Munich) was founded in 1858 and therefore looks back on a long and rich history. Since 1997, the pharmacy has been located in a modern new building in the hospital's central supply center and employs over 70 people. The hospital pharmacy stocks approximately 900 active pharmaceutical ingredients in 1,200 finished medicinal products. In addition, the hospital pharmacy prepares individualized prescription medications and cytostatic drugs for the chemotherapy of cancer patients.

It is essential that all professional and legal requirements for pharmaceutical logistics are met during storage and transport. The individual wards order their required medications three times a week, while intensive care units and the emergency department are served daily. For regular, recurring needs, the pharmacy uses an automated dispensing system. This system distributes approximately 66% of all listed medications directly into the transport containers designated for the wards. This amounts to up to 3,000 packages per dispensing day, which are picked into approximately 150 transport containers. After picking, the containers are checked, labeled with the recipient's address, sealed, and handed over to the central hospital transport service in container trolleys.

“It was important to us to use a reusable solution for sustainability reasons,” said Martina Fischer, specialist pharmacist for clinical pharmacy at the Klinikum rechts der Isar.

While searching for a suitable cooler for in-house transport, the specialist pharmacist for clinical pharmacy discovered Bito's reusable containers with thermal insulation inserts. The containers are suitable for the pharmaceutical industry and certified for refrigerated transport. Compared to other systems, their low empty weight was also a compelling factor.

The refrigerated goods are picked by hand and placed into reusable containers, then registered via a scanner system. The boxes are then filled with ice packs, securely sealed, and labeled with the appropriate address tag. An in-house transport service receives the addressed and clearly identifiable refrigerated boxes and transports them in container trucks to the individual stations.

The MB reusable container with thermal insulation set and the Pharmabox comply with the European guidelines applicable to the shipment of pharmaceuticals, the Good Distribution Practice (GDP).
