Robots conquer biotech warehouses

September 26, 2023

Jungheinrich is automating the logistics center of Sartorius Stedim Biotech, a leading partner in the biopharmaceutical industry, in a 15,000 square meter logistics center in the southern French town of Aubagne, which has 47,000 inhabitants and is located west of Marseille.

With the acquisition of arculus (in 2021), the Storage Solutions Group (early 2023), and the complete takeover of Magazino (in August 2023), the Hamburg-based intralogistics experts have placed automation at the heart of their growth strategy. This new contract builds on that strategy and contributes to the further expansion of the business unit.

Jungheinrich will install a state-of-the-art automation solution in the future logistics center at Sartorius Stedim Biotech's headquarters in Aubagne, France. Construction is scheduled to begin this year. With the new Jungheinrich solution, Sartorius will further develop its intralogistics while simultaneously increasing efficiency, flexibility, and productivity.

The new logistics center, scheduled to open in early 2025, incorporates several solutions: Storage will take place in a high-bay warehouse for pallets, served by three automated narrow-aisle forklifts (EKX 516ka), and in an automated small parts warehouse connected via pallet conveyor and container systems. A buffer warehouse will also be built to supply picking workstations according to the goods-to-person principle. The connection to the production area will also be automated via EKS215a mobile robots. The entire facility will be controlled by Jungheinrich's Warehouse Control System.

“We are proud to offer Sartorius Stedim Biotech a complete solution that meets the company’s ambitions. Supplying a production line and ensuring quality is a major challenge, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. That’s why a reliable, scalable, and flexible automated system is so important,” explains Sylvia Monteagudo, Sales and Business Development Manager, Automated Systems, at Jungheinrich France.

“The new facility allows us to optimize our logistics processes, shorten lead times and increase our storage capacity. Thanks to the automation of our site, we will be able to respond more quickly to growing market demand, increase our competitiveness and offer our customers an even more reliable service,” explains Valentin Curmi, Head of Logistics Development at Sartorius Stedim Biotech.
