Explosion-proof in a confined space

April 6, 2024

be showcasing its three electric low-lift pallet trucks, the T16 EX to T20 EX, at Achema in Frankfurt, promoting explosion-proof load transport in confined spaces. The AI-based "Reverse Assist Camera" also offers significant added value in explosion-protected areas.

“Every new explosion-proof vehicle model from Linde MH is developed in conjunction with the pilot series of the production vehicle. This way, customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics or food industries benefit promptly from the advantages of the technical advancements,” explains Elke Karnarski, Product Manager EX-Proof Trucks & Safety Solutions.

The T16 EX to T20 EX pedestrian-operated forklifts, with their robust chassis and reinforced forks, are designed for load capacities up to 2 tons. These models are available in equipment categories 2G/2D and 3G/3D for ATEX zones 1/21 and 2/22. Thanks to their short, narrow design, small turning radius, and intuitive steering and operation, these forklifts are exceptionally easy to maneuver.

Explosion protection measures include protection against electrical and mechanical sparks, constant temperature monitoring of relevant components, and precautions to avoid electrostatic charging.

The Reverse Assist Camera is now available for use in the 2G/2D (ATEX Zone 1/21) and 3G/3D (ATEX Zone 2/22) device categories. Developed using artificial intelligence, the camera has "learned" to distinguish between people and objects. If people are detected, visual and audible warning signals are triggered, depending on the distance. An automatic reduction in driving speed can also be activated to further minimize the risk of accidents. For use in ATEX Zone 1/21, the display and camera are housed in pressure-resistant enclosures. "The demand for safety assistance systems for explosion-proof industrial trucks has increased noticeably in recent years," explains Product Manager Elke Karnarski. "This is largely due to the fact that they are often part of a mixed fleet with standard equipment. Existing assistance systems are then installed across all vehicles to achieve a consistently high level of safety," she explains.

Customized solutions developed for individual applications are also common among explosion-proof industrial trucks. One example is the "Drum Skipper." This high-lift pallet truck, launched by Linde and equipped with an additional attachment, can transport 300-liter drums, grip open drums, tip them, and safely empty the liquids inside. An integrated scale operates with an accuracy of 500 grams. The drum clamping functions can be operated either via control levers or remotely.
