Mobile racking instead of narrow aisle storage

February 20, 2026

For those unfamiliar with Tumeltsham: This municipality of 1,587 inhabitants in the Austrian Innviertel region comprises 18 villages and has a trump card up its sleeve – Elmag, which  manufactures machines and tools for trade, industry, and crafts. And now, thanks to SSI Schäfer, it also offers new warehouse technology.

The Austrian family business supplies specialist retailers in around 25 countries with compressed air technology,  welding technology, metalworking machines, stone cutting technology, workshop equipment, and generators.  To manage this broad product range and ensure consistently high quality and reliable delivery in the future , a new logistics center is being built at the Tumeltsham site.

Originally, a narrow-aisle warehouse was planned. However, after initial discussions with SSI Schäfer  , it became clear that narrow-aisle racking was not the best solution for Elmag. Instead, the  intralogistics expert developed a concept that utilizes the space more efficiently, creates more capacity, and  optimizes all processes. The centerpiece: a mobile racking system with over 4,800 pallet positions.

“Despite the building planning being completed, SSI Schäfer was able to  integrate a mobile racking system at Elmag. This alternative approach resulted in up to 90% more storage capacity on the same footprint and  significantly simpler rack operation. This efficiency convinced Elmag,” explains Alfred Spicker, Head  of Dynamic Systems at SSI Schäfer.

For the new logistics center, SSI Schäfer is implementing a semi-automated solution that  provides space-saving storage for both large and heavy goods as well as small parts – while ensuring a smooth flow of goods.  Two heavy-duty mobile racking systems in robust steel construction are ideal for pallets up to 500 kg and  offer maximum flexibility, even for special load carriers, thanks to wire mesh shelves at selected  storage locations. The individually configured system offers order picking functions and meets the highest safety requirements with  components such as radio remote control, approach warnings, access monitoring from both sides, and automatic forklift release.

Additional space created

Even particularly long or bulky goods find  their place in the area surrounding the mobile racking systems using additional cantilever racking systems. Three SSI LOGIMAT  storage lifts are used for even greater capacity and throughput. They combine small parts storage and goods-to-person order picking in  a single system, increasing picking performance by up to 20%. By utilizing the full  room height, each lift offers space for at least 63 trays, each with a 400 kg payload. Confirmation light barriers, optical position indicators, and a touchscreen display ensure intuitive operation and ergonomic working conditions.

The new logistics solution offers Elmag numerous advantages: Unlike in a narrow-aisle warehouse,  pallet supply via reach truck can be carried out directly and without intermediate transfers. Manual  order picking is also noticeably more efficient, flexible, and safer in the mobile racking system. At the same time,  investment costs are reduced, the available space is optimally utilized, and thanks to the modular design,  racks and storage lifts can be expanded at any time. Software integration is also easily implemented.

“With the new system, we are also flexibly positioned for future growth,” says Christian Weiss of  Elmag. “In addition to the comprehensive solution finding and the local proximity, the competent  overall consultation on all topics was the main reason why we chose SSI Schäfer as our partner  .”

The project is scheduled to start at the end of 2025, with commissioning planned for the end of spring 2026. SSI Schäfer will handle the entire process – from planning to go-live and beyond.
