IFOY: Ghost Hour at the Ramp

June 10, 2025

IFOY test results Aluco1 point cloud 310STRIX point cloud

The countdown to the International Forklift and Intralogistics of the Year (IFOY) Award (award ceremony on July 3rd) is underway. Results from the test week in Dortmund, for example, yielded interesting assessments for the nomination of an AI-supported system for freight measurement and automated dispatching called aluco STRIX .

AI-supported freight measurement enables precise shipment data capture through the use of stereo and 2D/3D cameras. Beyond traditional dimension calculation, it initially offers image documentation, scanning at goods receipt and dispatch, and automatic recognition of warning labels and Euro pallets.

The scientific check team, consisting of Richard Bormann, head of the research team for handling processes and intralogistics at Fraunhofer-IPA, Guido Follert from Fraunhofer-IML in Dortmund, Johannes Fottner from the Chair of Materials Handling, Material Flow and Logistics at TU Munich, and Thorsten Schmidt from the Chair of Technical Logistics at TU Dresden, attested to the overall system having a very good data basis.

Very good data basis

Fottner: "No one else offers this combination yet." The unique aspect of aluco STRIX is the consistent integration of hardware, AI, and precise measurement-based evaluation methods, all based on a single pass of the load through a portal at normal driving speeds with both forklifts and articulated trailers.

Based on the collected data, the second system component, automated dispatching, comes into play after the first phase. It uses the recorded shipment information, recipient- and package-specific data to plan the optimal allocation of shipments to the vehicles.

"On-the-fly" measurement

The freight measurement system, it is said, sets new standards with its "on-the-fly" method: It records packages in motion – without interrupting the process. And it goes even further: Through the use of artificial intelligence, the system continuously learns and can generate additional value from the captured image data.

Simultaneous hazardous materials detection, Euro pallet identification, and package visualization enable optimization of the logistics process. This allows for a closed, fully automated workflow based on verified data. A well-deserved finale for the IFOY Award final round, the results and rankings of which – as is known – will only be announced at the gala on July 3rd at the Phoenix des Lumieres in Dortmund.
