As a more sustainable fuel alternative for operating refrigeration units in trucks and trailers, Thermo King is now also promoting the fossil-free diesel fuel HVO, the availability of which has increased in Central and Southern Europe. Many fleet operators are already using HVO.
HVO fuel has been approved as a more sustainable fuel alternative for operating Thermo King refrigeration units in trucks and trailers since 2021. The increasing availability of HVO across Europe makes it possible to reduce carbon emissions from vehicle fleets by up to 90 percent.
The use of biodegradable HVO instead of conventional diesel leads to a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and particulate pollution from the engine, while maintaining the same performance.

HVO biodiesel can be used as a direct replacement or mixed with normal diesel without requiring engine modifications to the machine or more frequent maintenance intervals.
Since 2021, all Thermo King machines for large trucks and trailers with diesel engines have also been tested at the production facility in Galway, Ireland.
Thermo King views the measures as part of Trane Technologies' industry-leading approach and innovations to decarbonize buildings, industry and the cold chain, as well as to promote sustainability commitments targeting 2030, including the Gigaton Challenge, and the pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
