The fastest goal in the world won't be decided on the pitch of European and World Cup tournaments, but in logistics. Goal manufacturer Hörmann, at least, is currently claiming to offer the fastest vertically oriented model, with a speed of 4 m/s.
The fact that this applies to the HS 5040 TurboLux S from Hörmann has now been confirmed by the Record Institute for Germany (RID) – the German equivalent of the Guinness Book of Records.
According to the company, certification by the RID was obtained following a measurement taken directly at the production plant, which was precisely documented and confirmed by witnesses. The gate, measuring 3000 x 5000 mm, was installed there. An electronic distance measuring system provided the precise data.
Speed is certainly important for everyday work. Product Manager Bernd Röttger explains: “Firstly, the speed is a crucial protection for the door. Before an approaching forklift driver reaches the spiral door, it has already rolled up. This significantly minimizes the risk of damage. Secondly, combined with the equally high closing speed, very little heat energy is lost. This is a major advantage in terms of sustainability.” This makes the door an ideal solution wherever fast, uninterrupted material flow and energy-efficient operation are essential.
According to Röttger, it's not actually that difficult to get a gate up to such a high speed. The real challenge lies in then decelerating it smoothly. Furthermore, the gate must withstand this extreme stress for many years. The drive's spur gear was specifically designed for low wear and more than 1 million cycles. The gate achieves its high speed through a spring-weight counterbalance.
