The automotive parts supplier Metzger already operates a logistics center in the airport area near Stuttgart, featuring a manual shelving system, a manual pallet warehouse, and an AutoStore system with 30,000 bins. Now, a five-aisle high-bay warehouse and an AutoStore system with 80,000 bins from Kardex are being added.
The large-scale project also includes extensive conveyor technology for pallets and containers, several picking workstations, and complete control of the entire system by the Kardex Control Center. At the customer's request, the software will not only manage the new system components but also completely replace the existing legacy system. Kardex Mlog developed the concept for the new logistics center in collaboration with Metzger.
A major employer in Filderstadt
With around 200 employees, the company is already one of the largest employers in Filderstadt. The expansion on a plot of land measuring approximately 10,000 square meters will create additional capacity for further growth for Metzger Autoteile. The new logistics center in the Filder Airport area of Filderstadt is scheduled for completion by September 2026.
The Kardex Mlog delivery includes, among other things, five Kardex MSingle A-1000/15-ZT automated storage and retrieval systems and an in-house racking system for approximately 5,860 Euro pallets. The AutoStore grid, with a capacity of 77,000 bins, will be served by 30 Redline R5 AutoStore robots. This is complemented by automated bin conveyor technology with a total length of 160 meters.
Groundbreaking ceremony at the airport
In addition, Kardex is installing an automated pallet conveyor system with 200 drives, two vertical pallet transfer units, and six loading and eight unloading stations. The scope of supply also includes a pallet picking workstation to ensure the AutoStore system is replenished. The automated logistics systems will be powered by a large-scale photovoltaic system with a capacity of 500 kWp on the roof of the new buildings.
