MSF evacuates injured
Doctors Without Borders has equipped a train with medical supplies and personnel to evacuate war-wounded patients from Ukraine. On the first trip, 26 patients were transported from Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro to hospitals in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv. Most required post-operative treatment.
Some urgent actions still require a degree of bureaucracy. Hospitals near war zones repeatedly request, through what could be called "regular channels," referrals for patients to hospitals located in safer areas of Ukraine. The goal is, on the one hand, to relieve the burden on hospitals in light of the constant influx of injured patients, and, on the other, to provide patients with the best possible medical care.
Since March 31, MSF has been transporting nearly 300 patients from eastern to western Ukraine. The organization used a simple four-car train for this purpose. They transported hospital patients, nursing home residents, and orphans who needed medical care during the journey.
The new train now has eight carriages and can transport approximately 36 patients at a time. Its equipment includes an intensive care carriage, oxygen, and a generator that supplies power to all medical equipment.
"We know there's an increased need for assistance because we're receiving more and more requests. This is a new and technically advanced project, the likes of which MSF has never used before," Burton continued.
The smaller train will also remain in service. Patients' family members can also travel on both trains.
"Our job now is to work with the health authority to determine which hospitals are most in need of evacuations and then respond to their calls for help as quickly as possible," said Burton.
