In Sweden, most routes currently only allow trains with a maximum length of 630 meters. An extension would make rail freight transport more efficient. Now, with food from the Swedish supermarket Coop on board, the trains have been extended by another 200 meters.

The railway logistics company TX Logistik AB, part of the Mercitalia Group (Gruppo FS Italiane), deployed the fully loaded train on the approximately 500 km long route between Malmö and Frövi (Örebro County). The Swedish Transport Infrastructure Authority (Trafikverket) was involved as a third partner in the test run. A regular extension to 838 m would significantly increase transport capacity," says Lars Winther Sørensen, Managing Director of TX Logistik AB in Sweden. This, in turn, is an essential prerequisite for shifting more goods from road to rail. Even for goods that were previously transported almost exclusively by road, more extensive use of rail is possible.

The combination of high loading capacity per train and high speed in particular ensures a highly productive transport system. The test train carried 48 semi-trailers and traveled at up to 120 kilometers per hour. This would make it faster than trains on comparable test runs in other countries. It was pulled by a four-axle locomotive, which is usually used for rail freight transport.
Coop has been transporting food and other goods by rail in Sweden since 2009. Since 2012, TX Logistik has been operating for the retail chain between Bro, 30 kilometers northwest of Stockholm, and Malmö. Just two years ago, the number of round trips was doubled from ten to 20. "30 percent of our transports are now handled by rail," explains Peter Rosendahl, Head of Transport at Coop. The retail chain would like to increase this proportion further. "That's why we participated in this pioneering project and hope to be able to extend our trains in the near future." Further tests are planned.
