Forklift manufacturer Still is celebrating its apprentices as "innovators of tomorrow," who began their careers today at its headquarters in Hamburg and at seven other branches in Germany. Among the 64 new apprentices and dual-study students, young people are represented for the first time in the "Technical Computer Science & IT Engineering" program..

Traditionally, there's a "Welcome Day" for newcomers at the headquarters on the waterfront. The event is also streamed to all branches. Newcomers receive a comprehensive overview of the company, its products, and its philosophy, and get to know each other at a concluding barbecue. The following weeks are followed by initial insights into the various professional and learning environments, team-building activities, introductions to current safety and prevention standards, and a one-week forklift construction seminar.

"The training of qualified young talent has rarely been as important as it is now," says Training Manager Jan Wehlen. "We need competent, smart, and innovative specialists to successfully meet future challenges ranging from energy and sustainability to new technologies in automation and robotics."
Still is regularly recognized for its high quality of training. As part of the "Hamburg's Best Training Companies" certification program, Still has already been awarded the maximum score of five stars seven times. The company's own retention rate also speaks for itself: All 36 graduates from this year's graduating class have secured employment or a place on a further study program at Still.

Despite its high reputation as a training company, this year's recruitment of new trainees and students presented the company with major challenges for the first time. "During the application phase, we clearly noticed that career and study guidance in schools has been limited over the past two years. As a result, many young adults today are inadequately prepared for their career choices," explains Jan Wehlen.

Today, 29 apprentices began their training in six different occupations at Still's headquarters in Hamburg: from mechatronics and industrial mechanics to industrial management assistant. Among them, for the first time, is a trainee in construction mechanics. "Female apprentices are unfortunately still rare in technical professions," says Jan Wehlen. "We are therefore delighted to welcome a female career entry into the field of construction mechanics for the first time this year. We hope that we can inspire even more young women to pursue technical careers in the future." Six young adults are beginning their dual studies in Hamburg. In addition to "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology" and "Mechatronics," the "Technical Computer Science & IT Engineering" program is also represented for the first time. Here, students from the Nordakademie learn to answer the complex questions of the digitalized economy, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things – skills that will be indispensable not only for the intralogistics industry in the future. Starting with the 2022 training year, Still will be training a total of 204 young talents at nine locations across Germany in seven different apprenticeships and nine dual study programs.
