Peter Spuhler has the opportunity to step back a little from the top of the Swiss railway manufacturer: Markus Bernsteiner (55), currently Deputy CEO of the Group, Executive Vice President of the Switzerland Division, Head of the plants in Bussnang and St. Margrethen and who has worked for Stadler since 1999, is moving up to the top.
Spuhler himself intends to return to his role as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors. Due to the operational challenges and strong company growth in recent years, Spuhler was forced to temporarily assume operational leadership again as interim Group CEO in spring 2020. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic and geopolitical challenges, the company reportedly succeeded in strengthening and further developing its operational performance. With the nomination of Markus Bernsteiner as Group CEO, the course has been set for a successful future.
"Markus Bernsteiner has everything he needs to lead Stadler to success as Group CEO, even in times of continued major challenges. With Markus Bernsteiner, I have gained an extremely competent, long-standing companion and experienced entrepreneurial personality for the position of Group CEO." Bernsteiner has many years of extensive professional experience in rail vehicle manufacturing. Spuhler: "I am convinced that with his broad expertise in rail vehicle construction and his leadership skills, we are ideally positioned to successfully handle our high order backlog and further increase the company's profitability."
As CEO, Bernsteiner initially led the plant in Bussnang, then Altenrhein and St. Margrethen, and from 2018 onward, he also held interim responsibility for the Berlin plant. In 2014, he was responsible for the establishment of the "Components" division, in which all internal supplier plants were successfully integrated under a single management team. Before his career at Stadler, Markus Bernsteiner worked for Bühler AG and Benninger AG. Markus Bernsteiner is a mechanical engineer and industrial engineer (HF), has completed further training in business administration (KMU-HSG and AMP-HSG), and holds an Executive MBA from the University of St. Gallen (HSG).
