High-tech and products processed from natural ingredients are not mutually exclusive. "Organic" does n't mean everything is done manually, but rather that it adheres to high ecological standards. This is also true for the organic wholesaler Weiling, where an AutoStore system has recently enabled peak logistical performance.

Now fully autonomous
The hit list of IFOY nominees: The "a" in the product name of the EKS 215a stands for autonomous – according to Jungheinrich, it's the first automated guided vehicle (AGV) in its class developed exclusively for automatic operation. However, it can also be operated manually in a pinch – via a key switch.
The cantilevered high-lift AGV isn't completely helpless if a malfunction brings it to a halt. The "key" assures that all functions are still available in case of doubt – just a bit slower.
The test installation of the first "true" autonomous high-lift truck in the Dortmund exhibition hall was quickly ready for the audit. It stores and retrieves pallets at heights of up to 6 meters with a residual load capacity of up to 700 kg. In the lower rack area, up to about 2 meters, the AGV can handle pallets or special load carriers weighing 1500 kg. As a truly autonomous vehicle, the device has a very small design: it can rotate at a height of 3.5 meters and serve the rack from both sides. This makes the cantilevered automated order picker, which went on sale at the end of 2021, small, compact, fast, and maneuverable.

If the vehicle, equipped with a mobile laser personnel protection scanner from Sick, is not currently operating and the lithium-ion battery is not fully charged, it can be temporarily charged during real-time operation – even in minute-by-minute steps, using a green contact plate overhead. This option is particularly useful in work situations where you don't know exactly when the forklift will be required next. The 24-volt concept with automatic charging ensures efficient multi-shift operation. The user-friendly touch display ensures intuitive operation.
The AGV is controlled by a higher-level system: depending on the connection to the customer's warehouse management system (WMS), or as a standalone system from Jungheinrich, using sensor-monitored storage locations. The charger then pumps 300 amps into the battery. The battery is charged from 25 to 50 percent in about ten minutes; pushing it up to 80 percent takes about 30 minutes. Without a connection to a customer WMS, such as SAP, the customer is provided with a user interface with a drop-down menu. The web-browser interface is also available for mobile phones and tablets. However, for product liability reasons, the customer cannot program it.

Unlike a reach truck, the EKS 215a, with its cantilevered forks, can also access and automate stations that are not accessible from below. Thanks to its compact footprint, the new truck masters the internal transport of load carriers in mixed operations with manually controlled vehicles or people with ease. A wide range of mast types is available depending on the application. Incidentally, the high-lift AGV can also be easily connected to ERP systems via the Jungheinrich Logistics Interface.
Automating manual logistics processes is becoming increasingly important. With the new EKS 215a, processes can be integrated into existing infrastructures, even in mixed operations involving manual vehicles or personnel. The integrated scanner and the adaptive protective field concept further contribute to making the EKS 215a a highly recommended solution.
As mentioned, the actual IFOY award winners will remain secret until the very end. The IFOY gala and awards ceremony will take place on June 30 at BMW Welt in Munich.
