The German postal group is investing over half a billion euros in its British e-commerce business. More than half of this will go into a brand-new hub with a total area of 25,000 square meters south of Coventry Airport. The new facility is expected to be able to process over 500,000 shipments per day.

More than 4,000 new jobs are to be created. The investments will primarily be directed toward sustainable growth – vehicles with alternative drives and buildings that meet high environmental standards. DHL eCommerce Solutions is investing over €560 million in its British online business with DHL Parcel UK alone. This is the company's response to a 40 percent increase in volume since the beginning of 2020 and the growing demand for e-commerce and B2B services. The company aims to position itself as a pioneer of sustainable and digital logistics in the UK.

"E-commerce is one of the cornerstones of our 2025 strategy, and we will continue to invest in this sector. The investment in the UK plays an important role in this, supporting the expansion and modernization of our European network," says Pablo Ciano, CEO-designate of DHL eCommerce Solutions.

The new facility at SEGRO Park Coventry Gateway, with capacity for over half a million shipments per day, is expected to create more than 600 jobs, including warehouse specialists and drivers, as well as administrative and management positions. The new hub will offer a secure bonded warehouse and customs clearance capabilities to support international e-commerce, a cross-dock terminal with 48 loading gates, and state-of-the-art high-speed sorting systems for automated sorting of shipments of varying sizes and weights.

The building is designed to reduce its carbon footprint, including solar panels with a total area of 7,000 m2, LED lighting, and green spaces to protect biodiversity in the surrounding area. In addition to charging stations for electric cars, there will also be widespread charging stations for electric vans and a refueling infrastructure for sustainable fuels on site, anticipating technological developments for larger vehicles in the coming years.

In addition, an initial investment of €75 million will be made in modernizing the company's fleet, with a focus on alternative fuel vehicles. The fleet investment includes six fully electric 18-tonners, 30 liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG)-powered trucks, and 18 electric tractors.

In addition, DHL eCommerce Solutions plans to invest more than €220 million in the development of ten brand-new collection and delivery depots in the UK and expand 20 existing locations. The new and expanded depots will create an additional 3,500 jobs. Peter Fuller, CEO of DHL Parcel UK, said: "With this investment (...) we will be excellently positioned to benefit from market growth."
