Controlling the flow of people
March 12, 2021

In China, before, during, and after the coronavirus pandemic, nothing is without superlatives. Thyssen Elevator is supplying 40 elevators, 38 escalators, and 30 moving walkways for the new airport terminal in the southern Chinese metropolis of Shenzhen. The hall is scheduled to open in June and will significantly increase the airport's overall capacity.
Shenzhen Airport is a key transportation hub and of fundamental importance for the entire region surrounding the metropolis. For TK Elevator, this presents an attractive opportunity to establish groundbreaking mobility solutions in one of the key economic areas where efficient and innovative transportation options are particularly important.

The new terminal is an extremely ambitious project. Its total cost is $1.5 billion. It has an X-shaped floor plan and encompasses approximately 238,000 square meters. It features 53 contact stands and ten additional parking spaces. The terminal is expected to handle 22 million passengers per year. A project of this magnitude requires efficient and comfortable mobility solutions.
At the heart of the new hall, daylight streams through the roof structure, whose curved shape is reminiscent of the region's rivers. The overall design also serves to manage the flow of people as intelligently as possible. Arriving passengers are guided to the outer areas of the hall, benefiting from the daylight as they move toward the APM and then on to the main terminal.

With this current delivery, TK Elevator is building on its existing business relationships with the airport operators, having previously participated in the construction of Terminal 3. The current delivery also includes customized systems, including the high-performance escalators and moving walkways with rollers on the outside of the step chain for easier maintenance and greater load-bearing capacity.
Installation began in August 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2021. As part of the contract, TK Elevator will also be responsible for maintenance during the first two years of operation.
