In intralogistics, Bluhm is known for its labeling systems. The seemingly similarly named company, Julius Blum, comes from Austria, generates 20 times as much revenue from furniture fittings, and is now being equipped by Dematic with all the bells and whistles of modern high-bay warehouse technology.
This will upgrade the logistics center of the Austrian manufacturer and distributor of furniture fittings, Julius Blum, near the Polish city of Poznań. Dematic is also installing eight storage and retrieval machines (SRMs) to ensure the automatic storage and retrieval of pallets. Other components of the customized solution include heavy-duty BK25 unit load conveyors, as well as chain and multi-level conveyors that connect existing storage areas with the high-bay warehouse. Completion and commissioning are planned for the fourth quarter of 2023.
"The solution consists of tried-and-tested standard components that have already proven themselves highly reliable and durable in many other Blum plants worldwide," says Markus Schneider, Group Manager Intralogistics at Julius Blum. In addition to the intralogistics automation, including a software solution for the new high-bay warehouse, the contract also includes the connection to the existing conveyor system and the interconnection of the individual logistics areas.

The high-bay pallet warehouse is served by eight SR-U1200/1 stacker cranes cranes have single-wheel drive and are considered particularly durable. "Thanks to their modular design, they be precisely tailored to our requirements," explains the group leader.
The heavy-duty BK25 unit load conveyors are capable of transporting five different types of load carriers. The conveyor technology package is complemented by T5 chain conveyors, which ensure horizontal conveying and perpendicular inward and outward transfer of pallets or pallet cages. Six tiered conveyors act as connecting elements between the conveyor levels, raising or lowering the unit load as needed. "The solution guarantees us optimally coordinated processes and a fully automated material flow between the individual storage areas," adds Schneider. In addition, Dematic is expanding the material flow computer system and a warehouse management computer to automatically consolidate all relevant data into one system.
Dematic and Blum enjoy a long and successful partnership. Dematic's predecessor company, Mannesmann Demag, first supplied the manufacturer and distributor of furniture fittings systems with customized warehouse technology in 1986. "Both Dematic's solutions and the collaboration have proven successful," says Schneider. Dematic also operates at other locations for Blum—for example, several plants in Austria, the central warehouse in Canada, and the production warehouse in the USA. Automation is primarily achieved with storage and retrieval machines, conveyor systems, and picking stations, along with the associated software. "The long-standing collaboration, direct contact with key personnel, and standards help us implement joint projects quickly, reliably, and efficiently," Schneider summarizes.
