“Chuck” – the “bridge builder”

April 30, 2022

At the US warehouse technology provider 6 River Systems, the IT-supported control center for warehouse management is called "The Bridge," like the command center in shipping. It is from there that the mobile robot "Chuck" is launched, which will also be on display at LogiMAT.

In 2011, founders Rylan Hamilton and Jerome Dubois met at Kiva Systems (now Amazon Robotics). They decided to establish their own company, whose name symbolized the flow of goods (the Charles River in Boston has six tributaries...). 6 River Systems now has a European headquarters and an innovation center in Frankfurt am Main.

Now, at LogiMAT in Stuttgart from May 31 to June 2, 6RS will be showcasing a range of new features and enhancements to its Fulfillment Execution System (FES), centered around the autonomous mobile robot "Chuck." Recent enhancements include the integration of handheld computers and "The Bridge," which consolidates data from warehouse operations into an intuitive, cloud-based control center. Also new is the ability to deploy Chuck in multi-story warehouses. 6 River Systems (6RS) will be exhibiting in Hall 2 at Booth EF10.

For the first time, the FES from 6 River Systems can also be installed on a handheld computer. This allows the fulfillment execution system to be linked to other material handling equipment, narrow-aisle trucks, order pickers, or forklifts. According to 6RS, this also allows for the optimization of orders that cannot be handled with Chuck – such as picking oversized items, retrieving from high-bay racks, or working in very narrow aisles. Employees are guided through orders via the handheld computer's display with a uniform interface, while warehouse managers gain greater transparency over the entire operation.

All orders and warehouse movements processed by 6RS can be tracked, graphically processed, and analyzed on the "Bridge." The software captures data from all fulfillment solutions in the warehouse and presents it in an intuitive user interface. Data comes from receiving, sorting, packaging, carton production, and shipping. Mobile access allows users to access the data worldwide and monitor intralogistics processes.

For multi-story logistics centers, Chuck's control software has been adapted so that the autonomous robot can now also operate on mezzanines. With new peripherals, Chuck can perform additional tasks. For example, a removable ladder is now available, allowing pickers to reach even hard-to-reach items. Also available are an integrated mobile printer mounted on the Chuck, wireless handheld scanners, and a container for removing packaging material from the picking aisles.

6RS now employs nearly 400 people, 50 percent of whom are based outside of its home state of Massachusetts. In 2021, 6RS recorded record growth in new customer acquisitions. The fulfillment solutions centered around the Chuck robot are deployed in more than 100 warehouses, typically paying for themselves in less than 15 months.
