Billion-dollar contract from Canada: State-of-the-art digitalization and automation technology will be used to expand local rail transport around Canada's capital. The 450 km of lines are to be completely modernized, and the experience gained will subsequently be used in Germany.

The internationally active DB subsidiary Deutsche Bahn International Operations (DB IO) prevailed in the competition for the double-digit billion euro contract. As the lead partner in a joint venture, DB will assume responsibility for the planning, operation, and maintenance of regional rail passenger transport in the city of Toronto, which has a population of one million, and the surrounding province of Ontario. "This transport project is considered the most significant in Canadian history," says DB Board Member for Infrastructure Ronald Pofalla. "Rail transport around the city of Toronto, which has a population of one million, is being completely redesigned. This contract is unique." He added that there is nothing comparable in Germany or Europe. An enormous transfer of technology and knowledge, as well as the experience gained in Canada, could benefit the railway in Germany. "The profits will flow into our German network." The project will begin immediately after the contract is signed with preparations for the operation and expansion of the rail network. Significantly more capacity and performance will be available on the network when operational operations begin in 2025.
