Stadler is working with the German Aerospace Center to develop a flexible battery system with different performance characteristics for passenger trains. A project called MOSENAS will initially produce a demonstrator of the scalable concept .

According to the announcement, this is a modular, scalable battery system for battery-powered multiple units, whose performance and capacity can be adapted to specific route-specific usage scenarios. The integration of renewable energies is intended to support sustainable rail operations.

Trains equipped with MOSENAS ( Modular Scalable Energy Storage for Sustainable Local Rail Passenger Transport ) are intended particularly suitable where battery-electric operation was previously uneconomical or not possible for technical reasons. The battery systems can be specifically tailored to vehicle rotations, operating times and existing charging infrastructure. This makes it possible to optimise the expected service life of the battery systems.
It is well known that can be equipped with overhead lines for technical and that are recharged in between runs are suitable on non- or partially electrified lines . The trains are intended to be able to be quickly recharged at charging points in stations, depots or on overhead line routes. The charging processes should place as little strain as possible on the existing power grid.

So -called second-use batteries in stationary storage systems could also balance and buffer peak loads at charging points. These are batteries that no longer have their full capacity due to aging processes. While they are no longer suitable for use in vehicles, they can be used, for example, as temporary storage in the charging infrastructure.
The Federal Ministry of Transport is supporting the project 5.3 million
