High-tech and products processed from natural ingredients are not mutually exclusive. Far behind: The Brenner
The Swiss NEAT (Northern Railway) has long been completed – in Bavaria, the Brenner transit route is still a stumbling block. "We can't wait until the base tunnel is finished," says the Bavarian business community. "Freight must be moved by rail immediately." But many companies are still avoiding rail due to a lack of capacity, a lack of flexibility, and unpunctual freight trains. This is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future.
"We need faster route expansion and more terminal capacity," demands Bertram Bossard, Managing Director of the Association of Bavarian Business (vbw), at the conclusion of a "Climate-Friendly Brenner Transit" project at the Logistics Competence Center (LKZ) in Prien. The stated goal was to demonstrate opportunities for a shift to rail for Alpine transit. The results of the project, funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, demonstrate ways in which freight transport can be handled more efficiently and at the same time more environmentally friendly on the existing infrastructure. "So we need faster route expansion and more terminal capacity," says Brossardt.
B. Brossard
Overall, a majority of the companies surveyed would like more information about rail freight transport in general. So, is the lack of proper marketing perhaps the only problem?
From the perspective of the companies surveyed, the processes are too complex due to the large number of players in rail freight transport and require a significant amount of planning. "Therefore, the project formulated specific requirements for a central, digital information platform. For example, it should clearly present the legal conditions in the participating countries, provide early notification of construction sites and line closures, and ideally enable queries on available capacity and real-time data down to the minute. This would make rail transport more attractive for companies (...). We are counting on the federal government to contribute to improved traffic flow and lower emissions with such digital solutions," explains Brossardt.

Christian Bernreiter, State Minister in the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, stated: "The Brenner Corridor is one of Europe's most important transport arteries for freight transport. Freight traffic is growing steadily, and road freight transport is particularly responsible for high CO2 emissions." Bavaria is therefore pursuing numerous projects to shift transport to rail and, in particular, to improve the capacity of rail freight transport. Only with an attractive combined transport offering can a consistent intermodal network be achieved. In addition to the railway companies and network operators, ultimately the shipping industrial and commercial companies are also required here. After all, the market determines which mode of transport the goods are transported by.
LKZ Managing Director Perta Seebauer also points to the need for cross-border communication among infrastructure operators and a harmonized, cross-border operational organization. The LKZ is also working on such a project on behalf of DB Netz AG.
