Stadler is now producing aluminum railcar chassis in Salt Lake City. The facility is part of the expansion of its existing US plant there, which manufactures passenger trains for the US market . With the new 4,600-square-meter hall, Stadler is also creating 20 new jobs.

Sparks fly as Stadler commissions its modern welding facility on Thursday, producing the first aluminum car body welded in North America. "We're committed to building more than just trains," said Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler North America. "We're creating economic opportunities, strengthening supply chains, and laying the foundation for a future where American
trains represent world-class quality."

The reality of the “Buy America Act”

The 4,600-square-meter welding hall on the Stadler campus in Salt Lake City will create up to 20 new jobs for local welders and technicians by the end of 2026. During the start-up phase, Stadler's top welding experts from the competence center in Hungary will support the Salt Lake City site, sharing their expertise and ensuring seamless knowledge transfer.

This positioning is one of the results of the "Buy America Act," which has required the rail manufacturer since 2016 to demonstrably generate at least 70 percent of its value creation in the USA if US taxpayer money is part of the financing. With the new welding facility and car body production, Stadler is further strengthening its local value creation in the USA, increasing it to around 80 percent. Of the remaining 20 percent, a large portion of supplies already comes from Europe, with the lower tariff rate of 15 percent. Stadler is currently analyzing all supply chains with the goal of further reducing the proportion of components subject to the high punitive tariffs.

Local ambitions

Local officials, community leaders, and team members were invited to the commissioning ceremony . Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall praised Stadler's commitment to the local economy and community: "This facility is a shining example of what can happen when global expertise meets local ambition," said Mendenhall. "With the opening of this new welding shop, car bodies will be manufactured locally. This means jobs, innovation , and a more sustainable future."
