The federal government's COVID-19 contribution will fall far short of covering SBB Cargo's losses. By the beginning of December of last year, amounted to CHF 35 million. After four months, an agreement has now been reached with the staff associations.
SBB Cargo continues to describe its financial situation as "very tense" due to the recessionary economic trends since autumn 2020 and the slump in traffic caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but expressed overall satisfaction with the outcome of the negotiations.
Accordingly, 0.3 percent of individual measures are to be used for the lower wage levels stipulated in the collective labor agreement (GAV) this year. The original target was 0.9 percent for all employees. However, no one-off performance bonuses for "very good results" will be paid out in 2020.
Employees with a collective employment contract and an uninterrupted employment relationship since at least mid-2020, which still exists as of May 31, 2021, will receive an extraordinary one-time bonus in 2021. This will amount to CHF 200, or CHF 100 for employees with a workload of less than 50 percent. A good gesture: SBB Cargo will not cancel vacation days for 2021.
The parties also agreed to extend the SBB Cargo Collective Bargaining Agreement by 20 months, effective May 1, 2022, until the end of 2023. "However, the strained financial situation will remain," says Désirée Baer, CEO of SBB Cargo AG. "With these measures, our employees are also making an important contribution in the current situation. We are convinced that our employees understand SBB Cargo's difficult situation during this pandemic." SBB Cargo Vice President Barbara Spalinger stated: "By extending the CBA by one year and eight months, our employees will gain the perspective they need in this difficult economic situation."
