AutoStore in the DHL Tech Center

March 8, 2023

There are now numerous demonstrator models of the well-known system – and the one at the Swiss Museum of Transport is still one of the most illuminating models of the globally successful AutoStore automated small parts warehouse. DHL has now turned red into yellow and installed it in Troisdorf.

At the DHL Innovation Center in Troisdorf near Bonn, everything revolves around visions, trends, and new technologies in logistics. Since the end of 2022, the exhibition area has been expanded to include AutoStore's automated order fulfillment system, including a warehouse management system (WMS), and a retail shop solution developed for DHL.

With its integrated warehouse and order-picking solution for retail, AutoStore is a new partner in the "Solution Box" exhibition area. The application example, implemented in collaboration with DHL, includes an online shop for merchandise items from which visitors to the Innovation Center can select and order products, as well as pick them themselves.
The core of the solution is a compact demo system of the AutoStore system with 250 bins, operated by two R5 robots, and a workstation. Visitors can watch live as the bins containing the items selected in the shop with a click are retrieved fully automatically by robots and transported to the CarouselPort. After retrieval and subsequent confirmation on the monitor, the bin is returned to storage. Along with the hardware and controller for the system, AutoStore also delivered and implemented its own Warehouse Management (WMS) solution for the first time.
This fits with the current DHL trend report on the "Future of Work in Logistics," which predicts that around 52% of manual tasks could be performed by machines by 2025. "We are showcasing a smart, complete solution for retail that seamlessly connects purchasing and logistics processes," says Peter Bimmermann, Managing Director of AutoStore System GmbH in Germany and the DA-CH region.
The DHL Innovation Center is visited by around 13,000 guests annually for tours, customer workshops, and events. The AutoStore solution is scheduled to be part of the exhibition for approximately two years.
