The rail industry in Germany currently employs 53,900 people and has recorded a record turnover of €12.9 billion. Rolling stock accounts for a significant portion of this, at €9 billion. However, to achieve climate targets, the reported 3% increase in turnover would be necessary.
Compared to the previous year, the Association of the German Railway Industry (VDB) says the increase after the dip caused by the pandemic is not particularly surprising, but realistically speaking, it is "still far from where we need to be," says VDB President Andre Rodenbeck. Nevertheless, the infrastructure business grew by 18 percent to 3.9 billion euros.

The rail industry in Germany also recorded a record order intake of €16.7 billion. According to Rodenbeck, the industry is experiencing a catch-up effect following the pandemic. For the digitalization of the railways, the consulting firm McKinsey calculated a necessary investment volume of €32 billion as early as 2018. If the current funding level remains unchanged, according to Rodenbeck, Germany would reach this volume in approximately 55 years – and thus miss its goal of complete railway digitalization by 2035. At least €2 billion per year is now needed. A consistent volume of contracts awarded to industry is also essential for the electrification of the rail network, enabling the necessary capacity to be built.
