Siemens, its consortium partners Orascom Construction and The Arab Constructors have a contract with system in the world, with a track length of 2000 km and a total value of 8.1 billion euros.

The scope of the overall contract is enormous. It includes the "Suez Canal on Rails," a 660 km long route between the port cities of Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea and Marsa Matrouh and already in September for 2.7 billion euros, and now also two further sections between Cairo and Abu Simbel, as well as 220 km between Luxor and Hurghada.

The network is intended 60 cities and includes the rolling stock: 41 eight-car Velaro high-speed trains , 94 four-car Desiro regional trains , and 41 Vectron freight locomotives. The turnkey contract includes the rail infrastructure, eight operational and freight yards, and a 15-year maintenance contract. This is expected to create up to 40,000 jobs locally.

The contract was signed by Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel Al Wazir, Siemens CEO Roland Busch, Orascom CEO Osama Bisha, and Arab Constructors CEO Sayed Farouk Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Chairman of the Egyptian Tunnel Authority Essam Waly, German Ambassador Frank Hartmann, and Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter were also
at the signing ceremony .

The trains will travel at speeds of up to 230 km/h and provide approximately 90 percent of the Egyptian population with access to the rail network . By shifting traffic to rail, the fully electrified is expected CO2 emissions by 70 percent compared to existing bus and car traffic. Together with the construction companies Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors, Siemens also provide turnkey services for the planning, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of the system for 15 years.

“The new electrified rail network marks the beginning of a new era for the railway system in Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East,” said President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. “The opportunity to equip Egypt with a modern, safe, and affordable transportation system,” said Siemens CEO Busch, is the largest contract in Siemens’ history.” Mobility CEO Michael Peter added: “Together with our partners, we will develop a complete rail network from the ground up, which will serve as a blueprint for an integrated, sustainable, and state-of-the-art transportation system for the entire region.”

The high-speed rail network, it is said, will enable the development of communities along the Nile, offering thriving business opportunities for small and family-run enterprises. On all three routes, plans to install a power supply system that delivers energy efficiently and continuously, as well as a safe and reliable signaling system based on European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 technology.
