Logistics provider DHL is launching a solar power grid at eight locations, which is expected to produce over 14 GWh of electricity per year – enough for 16,000 households (in the United Arab Emirates). This will be complemented by eight charging stations for electric vehicles, with the aim of electrifying 60% of its global fleet within nine years.

As part of a strategic cooperation agreement with the energy provider TotalEnergies, over 46,000 m² of photovoltaic modules will be installed. According to the company, the solar plant is expected to save more than 6,000 tons of CO2 in its first year alone. The project complements DHL's sustainability roadmap, which aims to achieve emission-free logistics by 2050.

“With an average of 8.7 hours of sunshine per day per year, Dubai has a clear advantage in terms of solar energy,” says Amadou Diallo, DHL CEO for the Middle East and Africa. “With TotalEnergies, we have a partner at our side who is not only promoting the use of alternative fuels, but also optimizing our overall energy consumption.”

The program also stipulates that 85% of the solar modules can be recycled at the end of the system's life cycle. Furthermore, they will, it is stated, "be manufactured exclusively in landfill-free certified factories.".
