Order intake in the Swiss metalworking industry increased significantly by 30 percent in the first months of the year. However, the association points out that these figures refer to the previous year's figures, in which sales had, as is well known, plummeted.
The vast majority of companies in the Swiss machinery, electrical, and metal industries (MEM industries) benefited from the strong global economic recovery in the first nine months of the year. Order intake rose by 30.6 percent compared to the same period last year, sales increased by 10.5 percent, and exports by 14.9 percent. Business owners in the sector continue to view the outlook for the next twelve months as generally positive.
However, risks, it is said, are emerging in rising raw material and energy prices, supply bottlenecks, exchange rates, and the continuing high risk of trade conflicts. The course of the pandemic also remains uncertain. This weakens confidence in the possibilities of investing meaningfully in innovation and digitalization.
