Technology supplier Bosch is pleased to be equipping the new Chinese mega-airport Chengdu Tianfu with only 1,000 cameras instead of 4,000. The reason is not data privacy concerns, but rather the architecture: the ceilings of the generously designed terminals were too high for conventional solutions.
Bosch has equipped China's new mega-airport, Chengdu Tianfu International, with a video security solution, a public address and voice alarm system, and a conference solution to optimize the safety of passengers and airport staff and the user-friendliness for travelers. Located in Sichuan Province, Chengdu Tianfu International serves China's rapidly growing "Garden City" of Chengdu, an emerging hub for trade, culture, and finance. The new airport, adjacent to the city and opened in June of this year, is expected to become the country's third largest airport after Beijing and Shanghai.
The installed audio and video technology was specially adapted to the airport's unique architecture. This includes two terminal buildings that reference the ancient Golden Sun Bird Totem, which was unearthed in 2001 in the Jinsha ruins of Chengdu. Due to the special design, standard security cameras were unsuitable for installation. Mounting ordinary cameras on these ceilings would have compromised the image quality and failed to provide the desired overview.
Instead, Flexidome panoramic cameras were integrated into the interior design, either mounted on the walls or embedded in the information panels. Each panoramic camera provides a 180-degree view of a detection area extending 25 meters away and with a 25-meter radius. This significantly reduced the number of cameras required: the use of panoramic cameras their number by 75%, resulting in cost savings on camera hardware, cabling, and installation.
While competing panoramic cameras typically use four lenses, the new cameras manage with just one, improving brightness, color, and sharpness. The cameras' precise tracking capabilities and high-quality video stream, it is said, relieve the burden on airport staff and allow incidents to be monitored without requiring additional security personnel on site.
Four Dinion IP cameras with 4K resolution are used to monitor the runway. Because the runways are very long, software is used to combine the images from these four cameras into a single, comprehensive picture. This ensures a complete overview of all takeoff and landing operations at all times.

Because the terminal buildings' interiors numerous glass surfaces that reflect sound, the acoustics for announcements had to be regulated them throughout the building . Acoustic simulation software was used to determine the number and optimal placement of the loudspeakers.
were installed, covering 700 different building zones. The loudspeakers are controlled so that passengers can clearly hear announcements throughout the terminal. Furthermore, announcements can also be broadcast to passengers in other areas of the airport, such as the adjacent hotel, adapted to the acoustics of their respective environments.
Bosch also supplied a Dicentis wireless conferencing system for the airport offices. The public address and voice alarm system used in the airport hotel is integrated into the overall system, ensuring that hotel guests are kept continuously informed about events at the airport.
