Less light has been shed on the matter

"It was dark, the moon shone brightly, when a postman, lightning-fast, very slowly, turned the corner..." The Swiss Post is implementing a new concept for area lighting in eight logistics centers: intelligent lighting. When not needed, it dims down. This saves the Post 1.16 million kWh.

Christian Mösch is thrilled. "Fantastic," says the head of the Härkingen mail center, because what's demonstrated in a time-lapse video using his center as an example already working in practice . Since 2020, the entire outdoor area of the mail center has been equipped with an intelligent lighting system. The principle: reactive lighting combined in a new way. The technology: thermal imaging cameras and the latest LED lights with asymmetrical beam angles. The effect: the light follows people or vehicles – dynamically, zone by zone – and only provides full power when it's actually needed.

Beat Hänni, specialist for technology and sustainability at Post Real Estate, has overseen the area lighting project for the past two years. The mail centers in Zurich-Mülligen, Härkingen, and, since March, Eclépens, are now equipped with smart lights and special cameras. The same applies to the large parcel centers in Härkingen, Frauenfeld, and Daillens. And the newly opened regional parcel centers in Untervaz and Vétroz already have the intelligent lighting installed. While the new system is expensive, the investment pays off in the long run: lower maintenance costs, reduced electricity consumption, and therefore lower energy expenses.

Thanks to intelligent control, light emissions in the vicinity of the centers are significantly reduced. This offers more benefits than commonly thought – because light pollution is a problem in densely populated Switzerland. Excessive lighting artificially brightens the night sky, negatively impacts people's sleep, stresses plant growth cycles, and disrupts the life rhythms of nocturnal animals. A single streetlamp attracts insects from a radius of up to 700 meters. They are either burned by the light sources or die from exhaustion.

Until recently, this was no different at the postal service's logistics centers. Operations almost never stop, and work continues diligently throughout the night. This is impossible without artificial light. And yet, there are many areas on these sites that remain unoccupied for up to half an hour or are completely deserted. "This is where our intelligent lighting comes in," says Beat Hänni. New postal parcel centers will be equipped with the new system as standard. Of course, it's only a tiny step towards a darker Switzerland. "But it is a step," Hänni is convinced. Even from a bird's-eye view.

Previously, the "yard lighting" at the postal logistics centers consisted of halogen and metal halide lamps with timers. These are often used on streets or sports fields. By converting approximately 270,000 square meters of area, the postal service is reducing by roughly the equivalent of 260 family households in Switzerland per year. The new lighting system is designed to last 25 years – on average 20 years longer than the previous one.
