Hydrogen for narrow-gauge trains

July 21, 2023

Stadler is the world's first rail manufacturer to develop, build, and deliver narrow-gauge hydrogen-powered trains. Following the delivery of the Flirt H2 for US passenger service, the first narrow-gauge hydrogen trains for Sardinia and Calabria are now being delivered.

The Italian railway operators Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST) and Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC) have awarded Stadler two framework agreements for the delivery and maintenance of ten hydrogen trains for ARST in Sardinia and 15 similar vehicles for FdC in Calabria. In Rome, ARST and FdC signed two contracts for the order of the first twelve H2 trainsets. Six will go to each of the two Italian companies.

The agreements cover the development, production, delivery, and maintenance of ten and fifteen trains, respectively, powered by environmentally friendly fuel cells and hydrogen for regional and suburban transport on the narrow-gauge (950 mm) network in the two Italian regions. Both projects are financed with EU funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The trains will be built in Bussnang.

“Stadler, ARST and FdC have a long-standing partnership,” says Stadler Sales Director Ansgar Brockmeyer. “We are proud to be jointly driving forward the decarbonization of rail transport in Italy. The new narrow-gauge hydrogen trains are pioneering for sustainable rail transport on narrow-gauge lines worldwide.”

The vehicles consist of two passenger cars, whose lightweight aluminum construction helps to increase the train's energy efficiency, and a PowerPack that houses the fuel cells and hydrogen tanks as well as other technical components.

With a total length of 50 meters, the trains offer 89 seats per vehicle for a total of 155 passengers and are fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. In addition, the new vehicles offer dedicated areas for wheelchairs, strollers, and bicycles near the boarding and alighting doors, as well as a toilet for people with reduced mobility (PRM).

In total, Stadler has so far received orders for more than 130 trains from operators such as Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) in Apulia and Basilicata, Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) in Campania and Ferrovia Vigezzina-Domodossola in Piedmont.

Stadler recently received new orders for the delivery of bimodal locomotives for Trenitalia, a new series of trams for ATM in Milan, and an additional fleet of metro narrow-gauge vehicles for EAV.
