Sensor array for the truck
September 16, 2022

Between logistics centers – from “hub to hub” – assistance systems already contribute to safety. Continental is now presenting a multi-sensor system that is essentially “placed” over the truck cab, and all components – lidar, radar, cameras – are pre-calibrated and coordinated with each other.
The multi-sensor system, also known as the Continental Sensor Array, can be mounted above the windshield on the vehicle and, as a complete solution, prepares fleets for higher levels of automation such as Level 4 and a larger number of different sensors, which can thus be installed intelligently, quickly, and safely. Claudia Fründt, Head of the Autonomous Mobility business unit at Continental, explains: “We see great potential in automated and ultimately autonomous driving in the commercial vehicle sector (...). Complex sensor systems are needed for comprehensive environmental perception. Our solution offers straightforward installation and calibration of multi-sensor systems in a single, compact module.”

Continental offers everything from a single source: sensors, central control units, calibration of the individual sensors with each other, and calibration of the complete solution during installation on the vehicle. Andree Hohm, Head of the "Driverless" segment, explains: "The effort required for the final calibration of the sensor solution during installation, the effort for mounting the sensor systems themselves, and, last but not least, for vehicle maintenance is significantly reduced. Looking ahead, this means that when trucks are driving autonomously and operating around the clock on the road, our sensor array can be easily replaced for maintenance work, for example. This avoids costly downtime." Furthermore, the electronic architecture and wiring harness in the commercial vehicle are significantly streamlined, and future updates can be implemented quickly.
