5G in the Port of Duisburg
November 7, 2022

Construction has begun on a 5G testbed for the semi-automated control of port cranes at the Port of Duisburg. The aim is to increase container handling capacity. The project was launched on November 3rd.
Semi-automated control of mobile handling equipment in inland ports has not been possible until now. The project partners now aim to create the necessary technical infrastructure for this for the first time. The partners include the University of Duisburg-Essen, Duisport, startport GmbH, Deutsche Telekom, and the engineering firm Polo Know-How. For the project, Telekom is equipping the Logport I port area in Rheinhausen with a dedicated 5G campus network – an exclusive, locally restricted mobile network that can be tailored to specific technical requirements.
Container cranes handle the majority of the cargo handling. The partial automation, it is said, will increase container throughput without requiring additional space for the port. Plans also include using 5G to connect numerous cameras and sensors within the port area. (

In addition to the Duisport Group, local businesses will also benefit from the development of the 5G campus network on the port grounds.
Alexander Garbar, Head of Corporate Development at Duisport and Managing Director of startport GmbH: “The results of this project can serve as a blueprint for other terminals in Duisburg, as well as for inland terminals throughout Germany and internationally.”
Hagen Rickmann, Managing Director of the Business Customer Division at Telekom: “Here in Duisburg, we not only have the opportunity to build and operate the infrastructure. With this project, we will explore and develop new applications for 5G together with our partners. Digitalization is playing an increasingly important role, especially in logistics processes. 5G is a key driver in this.”
