Make better use of packaging formats

An AI solution called OptiCarton is intended to optimize the filling volume of standardized cardboard boxes at DHL and improve the utilization of packing sets. The software should even be able to distribute orders across multiple shipments if this is more economical and reduces the carbon footprint.

DHL's supply chain division is now offering new on-demand packaging solutions that not only address the current shortage of packaging materials and cardboard boxes. Pilot projects have shown that customers can save an average of 15 percent, and in some cases up to 35 percent, on shipping costs. OptiCarton is particularly attractive for business customers with high shipping volumes, e-sellers, and online shops.

“Even though such a solution may initially seem relatively simple, providing packing instructions for individual e-commerce shipments in real time is quite complex. We are proud to offer a fully automated software solution that helps our customers optimize the utilization of existing packaging sets using artificial intelligence,” says Dietmar Steins, Head of Design at DHL Supply Chain. “Depending on the product, volume, and size, the software not only suggests the optimal size of the outer packaging but also provides customized, visual guidance for making the best use of space in the box. The interface is very intuitive and reminiscent of the popular computer game Tetris. While it is essentially just a simple piece of software, it delivers significant savings for our customers in practice.”
