"Lora" is a popular name for parrots that mimic everything they hear. Therefore, it's also a fitting name for transceivers that, in the Internet of Things, are designed to ensure clear data communication with minimal power consumption and maximum range.

Semiconductor provider Semtech, a specialist in IoT systems and cloud data connectivity, promotes high standards for everything from long-distance rural connections to indoor applications. These include smart cities, homes and buildings, communities, agriculture, metering and utility systems, healthcare, the environment, supply chains, and logistics in wide-area networks (WANs).

a new «Connect LR1121» combines the best high-frequency performance to date with the versatility of a multiband circuit, enabling module manufacturers to have a single hardware design for a wide variety of global data connectivity applications.

The LR1121 offers LoRaWAN connectivity for terrestrial low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) operating at 470, 868, and 915 MHz. It also supports LoRa 2.4 GHz and the S-band for direct satellite connectivity. Robert Comanescu, Senior Director of IoT Chip Business at Semtech, said: “This technology enables widespread adoption and strengthens LoRa’s position as the de facto platform for the Internet of Things.”

Semtech is promoting its smaller form factor and lower manufacturing costs. Sasaki Akira, General Manager of Connectivity Module Marketing at Murata, adds: “By collaborating with Semtech on this offering, we are leveraging the leadership and expertise of both companies to create the most needed solution in the IoT market, providing multiband LoRa and LR-FHss (Long-Range Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) communication over sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz ISM bands, as well as the licensed S-band for satellites. The new multiband module enables developers to accelerate product development by minimizing the bill of materials, costs, and complexity.”

The technology forms the communication layer for a so-called "LoRaWAN" standard. This standard is maintained by the LoRa Alliance, an open IoT alliance for Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) applications, which serves to establish IoT networks in over 173 countries.
