Viastore's software division has become the first intralogistics software provider to join the Open Logistics Foundation, aiming to promote transparency, efficiency and sustainability through unified logistics processes based on openly accessible, shared systems.

Too many cooks spoil the broth? "Wrong," says Harald Göbel, COO of Viastore Software. "When everyone combines their expertise with the know-how of others, they create successful formulas from which everyone ultimately benefits." The basic ingredients are open-source software and hardware. Viastore was convinced by the approach of the non-profit foundation and therefore joined the European open-source community. "Digitalization only works if we understand it holistically. We are happy to be part of an initiative that jointly develops solutions for standardized processes in the digital value chain," says Göbel.

The Open Logistics Foundation, with its open-source platform, the so-called repository, and its member organizations, unites the expertise of IT developers and users from diverse areas of logistics. Instead of closed software and hardware solutions, the open-source approach aims for de facto standards for logistics processes. For example, to enable the standardized handling of various shipping documents using electronic transport documents, or to utilize blockchain technology for the digital management of customer-relevant data along international supply chains.

The Open Logistics Foundation initiative comes from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML as part of its "Silicon Economy" research project. Founding members, as previously reported, include Dachser, DB Schenker, duisport, and Rhenus. The Open Logistics association welcomes new members from all areas of the logistics industry.
