SSI upgrades Sweden's Coop

With the opening of one of Europe's largest automated distribution centers in Eskilstuna, SSI Schäfer is supporting the Swedish Coop with its order picking process, which is 95% automated, for supplying over 800 stores. Before the project began, the company's logistics were largely manual.

SSI Eskilstuna3 310 95% of order picking processes are automated.

Following an intensive planning and implementation phase, Coop's new, state-of-the-art distribution center in Eskilstuna, Sweden, equipped with intelligent logistics software, is now fully operational. Coop opted for the construction of a central, highly automated distribution center that increases efficiency while also creating more sustainable and ergonomic working conditions.

At the distribution center, goods handling is now carried out using state-of-the-art technology. From delivery and storage to store-ready palletizing with robots, all processes run efficiently and seamlessly – in both ambient and chilled areas. The use of intelligent robotics and smart software not only increases productivity but also improves ergonomics and workplace safety.

SSI Eskilstuna Oerjan Granding 310Coop logistics manager  Örjan Grandin

Mauro Lunardelli, Head of Business Unit Logistics Solutions at SSI Schäfer: Thanks to our comprehensive expertise in complex retail projects and our leading technology, software and service competence, we were able to implement a future-proof, individually tailored solution for the customer from our modular system.

The measures include electric trains for freight transport, which significantly reduce CO2 emissions . One of Sweden's largest rooftop photovoltaic systems is estimated to cover 50% of the distribution center's annual electricity needs while simultaneously reducing its carbon footprint .

Protected working environment

The remaining electricity demand is met by other renewable energy sources. Ergonomic workstations promote employee health and ensure a safe working environment.

Örjan Grandin, CEO of Coop Logistics AB and Deputy CEO of Coop Sverige AB, emphasizes the importance of the project: With the new facility, we are creating a modern working environment that combines innovation, high-performance order picking and a future-oriented corporate culture .

SSI Eskilstuna2 310bThe 3D Matrix Solution combines storage, buffering, and sequencing.

A key element of the highly automated system is the SSI Case Picking System for efficient order processing, which is responsible for creating mixed pallets tailored to the specific store. Virtually all process steps are automated.

After the pallets are stored in the high-bay warehouse by a total of 25 SSI Exyz pallet stacker cranes in the ambient and chilled areas, depalletizing by a total of ten robots. The individual containers are then transferred to two automated small parts warehouses, which together have more than 600,000 container and tray storage locations and are connected by approximately 280 lifts. The storage locations are served by 700 Flexi Shuttles , which store and retrieve the cases in a triple-deep configuration.

The 3D Matrix Solution enables storage, buffering, and sequencing in a single system, ensuring 100% sequencing at maximum speed. The required sequence is defined and controlled by SSI Schäfer's proprietary WAMAS logistics software. A total of 34 palletizing robots precisely assemble the retail units into ready-to-ship mixed pallets. The SSI Pack Pattern Generator, part of the WAMAS software, focuses on the stability, volume efficiency, and store-friendly design of the pallets.

The entire system is controlled by the intelligent logistics software WAMAS . The central information platform offers seamless, data-driven monitoring and control of all processes – from incoming goods inspection to the pallet ready for shipment.

SSI Eskilstuna1b 310Photovoltaics are estimated to cover 50% of the annual electricity demand.

In addition, a Resident Maintenance Team of approximately 80 technicians works in shifts daily. This team monitors, maintains, and optimizes the highly automated system directly on-site – from the IT infrastructure to the mechanical system components. Through preventative maintenance and rapid response times, these experts ensure maximum availability of the entire system – around the clock, in multiple shifts, seven days a week.

A major logistics project that sets new standards. By automating key processes, we are increasing our overall productivity, ensuring consistently high quality, and improving our ability to deliver on time. At the same time, we are reducing our environmental impact: with a higher pallet fill rate compared to a manual warehouse, the solution lowers our transport costs and our overall environmental footprint. We are very satisfied with the result and the collaborative partnership with SSI Schäfer, summarizes Ulf Axelsson, Managing Director at Coop Terminals.
