Sevensense expands into Japan
August 23, 2023
This year's winner of the Swiss Logistics Award, Sevensense, has announced a collaboration with the Japanese robotics provider Rapyuta. Together, they will develop the next generation of autonomous forklifts based on Visual SLAM and cloud robotics.
Since commercializing its collaborative order picking robot, Rapyuta PA-AMR, the Japanese company has demonstrated a strong track record in automating logistics processes.
Building on this success, Rapyuta plans to expand its proprietary robotics platform, rapyuta.io, along with sophisticated software technology for controlling its robot fleet and domestically manufactured hardware. Given the high demand for automated forklift operations in the Japanese market, Rapyuta is currently developing an autonomous forklift and intends to enter the market with "Rapyuta Autonomous Forklifts." The Japanese company sees good potential in using Sevensense's Visual SLAM technology to address autonomous navigation challenges in dynamic environments.

The hardware consists of a compact unit including five factory-calibrated cameras and a processing unit with pre-installed software. The system can be easily mounted on the roof of any vehicle and requires only minimal connections such as power and Ethernet.
A web-based interface guides the user through a simple step-by-step installation wizard to calibrate and set up the interfaces, configure and evaluate positioning performance on the target vehicle.
By using an evaluation kit, Rapyuta was able to significantly reduce the integration time required to implement a fully functional Visual SLAM positioning system on its autonomous forklift.
Gajan Mohanarajah, co-founder and CEO of Rapyuta, explained: “We were looking for a technology that would allow our autonomous forklift to navigate complex environments easily and efficiently.”
Gregory Hitz, CEO and co-founder of Sevensense Robotics, added: “We are honored and confident that our technology will enable Rapyuta Robotics to deliver high-performance autonomous forklifts to its customers.”
