"UAV" delivery service: Start in the north

HHLA Sky, the subsidiary of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik-Gesellschaft (HHLA), announces the launch of Germany's first fully automated drone delivery service at the Koerschulte Group in Lüdenscheid, using the drone control center integrated at the port company.

Two years of development have culminated in the launch of the first commercial delivery drone airline for B2B courier deliveries using autonomously flying drones. The German Federal Aviation Office (LBA) had previously granted the Koerschulte Group the first nationwide permit for scheduled flights with delivery drones. This marks the launch of Germany's first delivery drone airline authorized to fly autonomously in public spaces (SAIL III operating permit).

The drone flights are monitored by HHLA Sky's Integrated Control Center, the highly automated process management and control center software designed to ensure the safety of the entire drone operations process and to make the service easily scalable under the heading "Drones as a Service".

The first customer is Hotset, a sensor and process control technology manufacturer in Lüdenscheid. Five more flight routes are planned to follow in the coming months. Up to 80 packages per day will be delivered to customers within Lüdenscheid by the automated drones.

With a project called Drone4Parcel5G, Koerschulte, in cooperation with Telekom, which set up a 5G campus network at short notice, and the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, had been preparing for the establishment of a drone delivery service since February 2023.

The project in South Westphalia investigated 5G communication between drones and base stations, as well as between drones themselves. It focused on a concept for delivering C-parts, tool inserts, custom-made products, samples, medications, and other goods that need to be transported quickly and in small quantities. Payloads of up to 10 kg are possible. The Koerschulte Group is acting as the provider (operator) of the "Drone-as-a-Service" offering for this project and will continue to do so later. Drone specialists plan all routes, organize the entire flight operation, and, at the customer's request, fly our drones precisely and efficiently from destination to destination.

Until recently, drones had to be piloted by hand. With an autonomous drone delivery service using 5G, multiple drones can now be coordinated and monitored simultaneously in real time from a central control station located beyond visual line of sight. These 5G drones autonomously transport goods from point A to point B, plan their routes optimally, and react to obstacles to avoid collisions. The drones are now programmed and controlled from this central station. "With this technology, we are able to significantly expand the range of applications for drones," says Koerschulte.
