High-speed trains, intercity trains, regional and suburban trains, streetcars and trams – and now, for the first time, a metro for Taiwan. A consortium of ST Engineering (Singapore), Stadler, and Siemens Mobility will build the new MRT Yellow Line in the city of Kaohsiung. Stadler will supply the fully automated trains.
Stadler will contribute 25 fully automated train sets from its plant in St. Margrethen to the project. ST Engineering, as consortium leader, is responsible for overall project management and system integration. Stadler will develop and construct the new subway trains, while Siemens Mobility will be responsible for the signaling system.
With 2.72 million inhabitants, Kaohsiung is Taiwan's third-largest city and the economic center of the south. Following the opening of the Red and Orange Lines in 2008, the new Yellow Line comprises 22.8 km of mostly underground track, 23 subway stations with connections to existing lines, a light rail system, and stations linking the city's six main districts, connecting schools and universities.
Once the new line is completed, more than 40 percent of residents should have access to public transport.
“The delivery contract for 25 three-car medium-capacity metro trains for the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line is a first for us in the Asian metro segment. (…) The metro trains for Kaohsiung will be state-of-the-art and driverless (GoA4),” says Ansgar Brockmeyer, Deputy CEO of the group. Their special lightweight aluminum construction makes them very energy-efficient. “Furthermore, they will be specifically designed for Taiwan’s tropical and subtropical climate, with high humidity of up to 100 percent and extreme temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius.”.
In recent years, Stadler has won major metro projects in Spain, Germany, Great Britain, and the USA, totaling over 600 trains. This is actually Stadler's second major order for rolling stock in Taiwan. In November 2019, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) signed a contract for the delivery of 34 six-axle narrow-gauge diesel locomotives from Stadler. The first of these locomotives will be delivered in early 2023.
