The abbreviation DSD stands for Australia's intelligence service "Defence Signals Directorate," and sometimes for the "German Language Diploma," whereas "DSG" was the German Sleeping Car Company until 1994. Now it's "Digital Rail Germany." And there's another "tangle" in the mix. Digital, of course.
Whatever the case may be, Siemens Mobility has now won a €300 million contract to supply 28 three-car electric Mireo regional trains for the "Digital Hub Stuttgart" (DKS) pilot project of "Digital Rail Germany" (DSD). The trains will be equipped with a complete "DSD" vehicle package, including the latest ETCS and highly automated train operation (ATO) at automation level 2 (GoA 2). They will be capable of operating on steep gradients and will also be approved for operation in Austria. Delivery of the trains is scheduled to take place in record time between November 2025 and April 2026. The contract volume amounts to approximately €300 million.
The Mireo trains will be manufactured within Siemens' production network and are also required for the commissioning of the Stuttgart Digital Hub infrastructure. The infrastructure being built on-site can then only be used by trains with fully functioning ETCS. This is Siemens Mobility's first contract involving the implementation of a complete DSD vehicle package.
All 28 vehicles will be equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) and on-board equipment for highly automated train operation (ATO) at automation level 2 (GoA 2) according to TSI ZZS 2023, with system versions SV2.0 and, by 2030, SV3.0. As the foundation for the digitalization of the railways, the European Train Control System (ETCS) paves the way for harmonized, cross-border, and, above all, safe rail transport on the European and global rail network. Furthermore, Siemens Mobility is equipping new vehicles in Germany for the first time with Train Integrity Management Systems (TIMS) and the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). This digital vehicle equipment enables more efficient, denser, and more energy-saving operation through digitally predictive signaling and driving instructions.
