Service for the "most powerful locomotive in Europe"
February 9, 2024
Stadler's Euro9000 locomotive is an impressive behemoth, first unveiled at InnoTrans in 2019. Rail vehicle leasing company Alpha Trains has now signed a full-service contract with the manufacturer. With its 9 MW output, Stadler claims it is the " most powerful locomotive in Europe .
"
The agreement covers the complete maintenance of all EURO9000 locomotives recently ordered by Alpha Trains for a period of at least twelve years from delivery. Alpha Trains announced its first order of twelve six-axle EURO9000 hybrid multi-system locomotives of the latest generation in 2023, with delivery scheduled for 2025 and 2026.
The EURO9000 is an electric multi-system Co'Co' locomotive that enables operation on both AC and DC electrified lines. Its modular design allows for the installation of up to three different drive systems (electric, diesel, and/or battery power) to operate the same trains on non-electrified lines.

It is designed for use on international routes along the main European rail corridors. With a power output of up to 9 MW, Stadler claims it as the most powerful locomotive in Europe – designed for high-speed operation on the main European corridors in mixed traffic. It allows heavier and longer trains to be hauled by a single locomotive, resulting in higher payloads and lower traction costs. It is compatible with various country packages, including conventional automatic train control systems as well as the European Train Control System (ETCS). Thanks to this versatility, it can be used in both heavy freight and medium-speed passenger transport. The initial configuration, covering Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium, is planned to be expanded to include other countries in the future.
In 2019, Stadler received its first order for EURO9000 locomotives from European Loc Pool (ELP). Alpha Trains also offers attractive leasing products and state-of-the-art locomotives that contribute to shifting freight traffic from road to rail.
