The new logistics hub in Zurich's Hardfeld district was officially opened by Coop CEO Philipp Wyss. It enables over 70 retail outlets in the city of Zurich to be supplied by rail. Goods are loaded onto trains at the Schafisheim distribution center and transported to Zurich by rail trucks will be gradually introduced for the final distribution to the retail outlets
80 percent reduction in CO₂e
The reduction in traffic resulting from the elimination of truck journeys, it is said, corresponds to an 80 percent reduction in CO₂e emissions compared to road transport alone. Philipp Wyss emphasizes: " With the new rail hub, we are demonstrating that sustainable transport solutions are not just a vision, but a lived reality at Coop."
Coop CEO Ph.Wyss, Railcare boss Ph. Wegmüller.
Coop is thus expanding an innovative logistics concept that has been successful for years with its own railway company, Railcare, and setting new standards in the field of sustainable logistics. Two-thirds of national freight transport already takes place by rail.
Two-thirds already on track
The opening of the new railway hub in Zurich is another milestone for the cooperative. Coop not only supplies its stores with its entire product range, including fresh food and all kinds of non-food items, but also handles the disposal of empty containers and waste on the return journey – such as PET bottles returned to the supermarkets.

The logistics solution increases the efficiency of freight transport, avoids empty runs, and reduces road traffic. By shifting freight transport to rail, Coop is taking concrete steps to reduce its ecological footprint and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
By combining freight transport by rail and road, Coop saved over 18 million road kilometers last year alone.
