More trains are running in the base tunnel again
February 7, 2024
According to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the restoration of regular operations in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is currently proceeding according to plan. In addition to track repairs, the two high-speed switches at the Faido multifunctional station have been replaced. SBB anticipates resuming normal operations in September 2024.
According to SBB, more trains will be able to travel through the Gotthard Base Tunnel starting in March. Seven additional passenger trains will run each weekend from the beginning of March. Similarly, significantly more freight trains could travel through the base tunnel from March 25th. SBB, in cooperation with freight and passenger rail operators and the independent track allocation authority, has carefully considered the allocation of track capacity on the Gotthard axis from March 2024 and over the Easter holidays to take into account the different needs of freight and passenger traffic.
A special timetable will be in effect on the Gotthard route during Easter. Passengers traveling to and from Ticino will have access to additional trains and more seats, both through the Gotthard Base Tunnel and via the panoramic route. (Photos: SBB
) Significantly more freight trains will also be able to operate. This capacity expansion is possible because, from this point onward, trains will also be able to travel through the undamaged northern third of the western tunnel tube during the week. Thanks to the increased capacity, freight traffic can be shifted from the Simplon to the Gotthard route. This will be of great importance in the summer, as the line between Arona and Stresa will be completely closed to train traffic from June 9 to September 8, 2024, due to construction work for the four-meter clearance corridor on the Domodossola–Milano line.
