Last mile to the missile base

The "last mile," which here covers 1200 km, isn't quite weightless yet: Gebrüder Weiss is transporting twelve scientific experiments to the Esrange rocket base in northern Sweden for the Swedish Space Corporation's "SubOrbital Express" rocket mission. In space, they are intended to provide new insights under weightless conditions.

The SubOrbital Express 3 (S1X-3M15) mission, taking place from November 14 to 24, could inherently be linked to Swiss precision: Can watches withstand the accelerations and vibrations of a rocket launch? How can the health of astronauts in space be better monitored? And how do cells in the body behave when they are deprived of gravity? Research teams from Australia, Costa Rica, Portugal, Italy, Liechtenstein, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Sweden are contributing significant expertise to the mission.

“As the Swedish Space Corporation, we enable space research for international universities, research teams, and start-ups. Many of the experiments have a direct impact on science,” says SSC Program Manager Stefan Krämer. Logistics plays a crucial role in the project's execution: “It is essential that the equipment is transported to the rocket base on time and, above all, safely,” Krämer adds.

Frank Haas, Head of Corporate Brand Strategy & Communications at Gebrüder Weiss: “We want to contribute our logistics expertise to the further development of space travel.” Last year, Gebrüder Weiss already demonstrated its logistics experience in a simulation of an astronautical Mars mission in Israel.

Gebrüder Weiss is organizing the transport of the experiments from the SSC headquarters in Solna, near Stockholm, to Kiruna, 1200 km away. On November 22, the experiments will be launched into space from the Esrange rocket base. The parabolic trajectory will result in six minutes of weightlessness. The experiments will then land in an uninhabited area north of Esrange. From there, they will be transported back to the base by helicopter and subsequently analyzed by the researchers.
