Compressed air has traditionally been used primarily for fixed installations. Schmalz's vacuum grippers also mainly operate with lines that often have to run across halls and facilities. However, mobile robotics increasingly requires flexible solutions – a need that Schmalz now intends to address more effectively.

DHL Scania Extra Combustion Engine

DHL is now operating an electric Scania truck between Berlin and Hamburg, whose range is extended by an onboard fuel-powered generator. This makes it possible to switch to heavy electric vehicles without having to wait for a complete charging infrastructure.

Currently, the rapid electrification of heavy goods vehicles is hampered by a lack of charging points, high costs for maintaining sufficient charging capacity at depots during peak seasons, grid strain, and high electricity prices, for example, on windless winter days. The Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) from DHL and Scania offers a solution. This electric truck with a range extender can run on 80 to 90 percent renewable energy.

The new electric truck will be used from February in the Post & Parcel Germany division for parcel transport between Berlin and Hamburg and will be intensively tested there for several months before further vehicles are possibly purchased for DHL's own fleet.

The fuel-powered generator takes the place of one of the batteries in the all-electric truck, which isn't strictly necessary for most routes. This reduces the range in battery mode but provides an energy reserve. In this way, the vehicle achieves a range of 650 to 800 km (depending on the results of the test runs in Berlin) and can also be refueled at any conventional gas station if needed. For comparison, Scania's most modern and industry-leading all-electric trucks have a range of 550 km with the same maximum weight.

DHL CEO Tobias Meyer: “It will still take some time until the necessary conditions for a complete switch to battery-electric trucks are in place, especially in a system as large as the German DHL parcel network – through a sufficiently robust power grid, a reliable supply of green electricity, and a comprehensive charging infrastructure. Instead of waiting for that, DHL and Scania are working together on a pragmatic solution that enables more sustainable logistics and reduces CO2e emissions by more than 80 percent.”

Electric vehicles with range extenders are a promising interim solution that allows for a significant reduction in CO₂e emissions, especially where the necessary infrastructure is lacking and other prerequisites for switching to fully electric vehicles are not met.

The EREV is a 10.5 m long truck with a gross vehicle weight of 40 t, powered by a 230 kW electric motor (295 kW peak). Energy is supplied by a 416 kWh battery and a 120 kW fuel-powered generator. According to the manufacturer, the truck has a top speed of 89 km/h and a cargo capacity of approximately 1000 packages (the volume of a swap body). The truck can also pull a trailer with another swap body.

Deutsche Post and Scania filed a patent application for the technology in September 2024.
