«Apollo» mission in the mountains
October 22, 2025
«Apollo Go» is not a continuation of the space mission that took the US space agency NASA to the moon in the 1960s , but a Chinese company with whose help the PostBus division of the Swiss Post plans to test automated driving in four cantons soon.

circling the Swiss Alps
on Heidi-esque routes and remote mountain roads Swiss PostBus division to catapult the four cantons of St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, and Thurgau into the future, bringing the prospects of autonomous driving, as seen in Silicon Valley and, more recently, in Hong Kong and Hongshan, to the streets.
St. Regli: A new era in public transport
The vehicles to be used no longer have bulky superstructures, but instead feature a more aerodynamic design. Final test drives took place in Hong Kong in 2024 and in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in March 2025. Now, the robot vehicles, painted in post office yellow and operating under the "AmiGo" brand, are scheduled to be deployed in eastern Switzerland starting in 2027.

If everything goes according to plan, the first test drives will begin this December with the participation of the Federal Offices of Transport (BAV) and Roads (ASTRA), the cantons of eastern Switzerland, the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS), and other partners, involving mapping operations. Initially, the vehicles will be driven without passengers and with safety personnel on board. Technology partner Apollo Go states that it already operates more than a thousand automated vehicles worldwide.
Free travel for senior citizens
With "AmiGo", says Stefan Regli, Head of Mobility Services and member of the Executive Board of Swiss Post, PostBus will become a pioneer for a new era in public transport: The are not optimally served by traditional scheduled services
Available on demand via app
The goal is to establish and gradually develop a regular mobility service with automated vehicles in the operating area. The self-driving vehicles will be available on demand: Customers book their rides via an app. If other users are traveling a similar route at the same time , the system will also be able to combine rides (ride-pooling).
November 2024 in Hong Kong
Carpooling improves vehicle utilization. This creates a flexible, demand-driven service that makes mobility even more efficient, sustainable, and customer-friendly. Each vehicle offers space for up to four passengers and ample luggage storage. The entire fleet is electric . "Automated driving is no longer a vision of the future, but a reality under development. Now it's crucial to gather experience with driverless vehicles. Pilot projects like this one demonstrate how Switzerland is using automated vehicles responsibly – for safe, efficient, and accessible mobility," said Jürg Röthlisberger, Director of the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA).
«Major upheavals are underway»
Beat Tinner, President of the Government of the Canton of St. Gallen and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs, speaking on behalf of the cantons of Eastern Switzerland, stated: "With AmiGo, the cantons of Eastern Switzerland are sending a strong signal for future-oriented mobility and the innovative development of public transport." Jürg Wittwer, Director General of the TCS (Touring Club Switzerland), is also convinced that flexible, automated mobility services will play a crucial role in the future. "We will experience major transformations in the field of mobility, particularly in public transport. The diversity of routes and forms of mobility will change significantly." The TCS intends to support these developments.
Valuable technology partner
“We are delighted that PostAuto has chosen Apollo Go as its technology partner,” said Liang Zhang, Managing Director EMEA, Baidu Apollo. “Worldwide, we already successfully operate more than a thousand automated vehicles with 14 million completed journeys to date. We are bringing this experience to our first project in Europe, and we hope to further strengthen and expand our partnership with PostAuto in the future.”
Essentially, a modern-day Apollo mission. Whether there will also be free rides for senior citizens, as recently offered in China's Hongshan district, is not yet known. It would also be important to know whether the autonomous system can reliably maintain its lane on narrow mountain passes and winding roads.
