Further criticism of the MSC deal

The figures will not be officially published until March 21st. But they have already caused some consternation. Hamburg's mayor, Tschentscher, once again promoted the "MSC deal" in the city parliament on Wednesday, while the revenue of the port company HHLA has fallen to €1.447 billion.
In a television interview on Tuesday, Tschentscher assessed the drop from €1.578 billion to €1.447 billion as not particularly remarkable under the circumstances , since its main competitors Rotterdam and Antwerp had also experienced declines. On Wednesday, dockworkers also attended the discussions at Hamburg's city hall. And the Hamburg Senate is sticking to its planned partial sale to the Swiss shipping company MSC.
HHLA's group-wide container throughput fell by 7.5 percent to 5,917 thousand TEU (previous year: 6,396 thousand TEU). At the container terminals, the decline compared to the previous year amounted to 6.3 percent. Transport volume decreased by 5.4 percent to 1,602 thousand TEU (previous year: 1,694 thousand TEU).
HHLA CEO Angela Titzrath recently appealed for understanding: "In 2023, the war in Ukraine, geopolitical tensions, high inflation, and rising interest rates burdened the global economy and increasingly clouded economic development over the course of the year." This also impacted the entire logistics sector and HHLA's business. Despite these challenging conditions, the company managed to hold its own last year. Titzrath added: "We are consistently implementing our investments in automation to increase efficiency and are further advancing our activities to expand sustainable and networked logistics solutions."
The Management Board and Supervisory Board will nevertheless propose a dividend to the Annual General Meeting on June 13, 2024. However, it will be a negligible amount: eight cents per share. A final decision on the MSC deal is not expected until the end of May, following further committee deliberations.
