Information regarding the MSC Sky II, which was shelled by Houthi rebels in recent days, is scarce from the headquarters of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in Geneva. According to consistent reports, the fire on board was quickly extinguished. The container ship continued its voyage to Djibouti, where the damage will be assessed again.

According to Lloyd's List, the captain of the Liberian-flagged container ship (2,169 TEU, IMO number: 9162277), which was the target of two missile attacks approximately 150 km southeast of Aden, reported two explosions. The first occurred some distance from the ship, while a second projectile struck and damaged the vessel. The report added that the crew battled fire and smoke on board without any casualties. A further assessment of the damage is to be carried out in Djibouti.

A Houthi spokesman reportedly stated that an operation had been carried out against a so-called "Israeli ship." He also claimed that the attack in the Arabian Sea involved "a number of suitable naval missiles and that the hit was precise and direct.".

Houthi forces also fired missiles and drones at US warships in the Red Sea. The Belizean-flagged bulk carrier Rubymar (IMO: 9138898), which was hit by two Houthi missiles while crossing the Red Sea last month, sank over the weekend. An oil slick and 21,000 tons of ammonium phosphate sulfate were left behind. Most shipping companies are now rerouting their cargo traffic around the Gulf of Aden, forcing them to use longer alternative routes.

Founded in 1970 by Gianlugi Aponte, the Mediterranean Shipping Company operates a global network of more than 480 branches with 70,000 employees in 155 countries. Its fleet comprises 490 container ships with a capacity of approximately 3.1 million TEU (20-foot equivalent units). Global schedules include 200 routes calling at 500 ports.
