Freight trains are back in the base tunnel

Last night, the first freight train – a RailCare unit – was able to pass through the eastern tube of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. A mail train from Härkingen to Cadenazzo followed later from the north. According to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), starting today, almost 100 freight trains per day can again travel through the intact parallel tube.

A field trial recently evaluated by Trailer Dynamics and Duvenbeck provides an indication of the energy consumption of a semi-trailer, but also of the potential savings offered by electric solutions. With the eTrailer, the tractor unit consumed 45% less diesel.
Autonomous reverse coupling
ASI Logistics and sensor manufacturer Sick have jointly solved the problem of autonomous reversing to approach trailers – one of the final steps towards fully autonomous shunting operations. ASI uses a robust Vehicle Automation Kit, while Sick supplies the 2D LiDAR sensors.

Gebrüder Weiss supports football. The Vorarlberg-based company recently acquired the Bayreuth-based freight forwarding company Wedlich – and now they are taking on a gold sponsorship for the footballers of SpVgg Bayreuth. Locally, the club is known as "Oldschdod" (Old Town).
Enormous damage in the Gotthard tunnel
The damage caused by the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel extends over a total of 8 km. SBB CEO Vincent Ducrot admitted to the media that the extent of the destruction is greater than initially thought. Repairs to the tunnel will take several months.
Shock at the Gotthard Base Tunnel
Devastated security gate
Right at the point where the two Alptransit tunnels cross over, near Faido, a freight train derailed on Thursday, tearing up large sections of the underground track bed. Several hazardous materials wagons at the rear of the train became uncoupled. Although they were not full, they still contained hazardous materials within the risk category.

In the three-part series on the "digital node"

The abbreviation DSD stands for Australia's intelligence service "Defence Signals Directorate," and sometimes for the "German Language Diploma," whereas "DSG" was the German Sleeping Car Company until 1994. Now it's "Digital Rail Germany." And there's another "tangle" in the mix. Digital, of course.
Enough with the rattling!
Since this summer, Gebrüder Weiss has been supplying private households and companies on the Croatian islands of Rab and Lošinj using electric tricycles - ideal for deliveries in small towns, holiday resorts and national parks – especially during the holiday season.
«Undercover» emission-free
A Norwegian clean-tech company called Teco, which develops PEM hydrogen fuel cell stacks and modules for the shipping and heavy industries, has entered into an agreement with an unnamed vehicle manufacturer to jointly develop zero-emission systems.
TX Logistik acquires Exploris
TX Logistik AG, a company of the Mercitalia Group, which bundles the logistics activities of the state railway company FS Italiane, is acquiring the rail-bound freight transport provider Exploris, thus becoming the second largest rail transport provider in Germany.
Hyperloop capsule certified
At the Technical University of Munich, the first Hyperloop capsule – not for freight transport, but for the even more safety-critical passenger transport – has been certified on a 24-meter track. Now the researchers want to focus on the propulsion system, the levitation technology, and the vacuum behavior.
Justin doesn't need to look anymore
Whether it would sometimes be an improvement if a robot " grasped things the way a human would " is debatable. The German Aerospace Center (DLR), however, promotes this as an advantage for its humanoid " Agile Justin " " feel " with its robotic hands .
Hydrogen for narrow-gauge trains
Stadler is the world's first rail manufacturer to develop, build, and deliver narrow-gauge hydrogen-powered trains. Following the delivery of the Flirt H2 for US passenger service, the first narrow-gauge hydrogen trains for Sardinia and Calabria are now being delivered.
Site network expanded
The Vorarlberg-based logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss is expanding its network of locations in southern Germany through the acquisition of Wedlich in Bayreuth, a provider specializing in land transport, logistics and removal services, and its approximately 100 employees.
Red line "crossed"

The US Infrastructure Investment Bill, initiated by the Biden administration, gives municipal transit authorities the opportunity to modernize their often outdated vehicle fleets. Twenty-four articulated light rail vehicles from Siemens, built in Sacramento, will soon connect East Cleveland to the airport on the "Red Line.".
Transport management for high-flyers
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) demonstrated an air transport scenario in Cochstedt between Hamburg Airport and a "stop" (Vertidrom) on the Inner Alster lake. The HorizonUAM (Urban Air Mobility) project aims to define aircraft, flight corridors, and landing stations.
